Hola!

We hope this newsletter finds you in fine spirits and good health. As we approach the holiday season our hotels are filling up and we are all getting ready for our traditional Christmas celebrations. As the article to the right illustrates, for Christmas in Oaxaca you can expect fourth of July fireworks combined with Thanksgiving dinner.

We also have articles on the music, crafts, hot chiles and contemporary fine art in Oaxaca. Our next issue will feature an article on staying healthy in Mexico and an update on the protests about McDonalds coming to Oaxaca ( we'll tell you what came out of the mayor's consulting with the public about allowing a McDonald's to open on our city's historic main square ).

This four centuries old ex-convent of Santa Catalina (declared an historic monument by UNESCO) is located conveniently about 4 blocks from the main square (the zocalo.) and is close to shopping, dining, museums and galleries.

Walk down our long tiled corridors with their fading original frescoes and you can hear the faint sound of Gregorian chant in the air as you discover our several sun-splashed courtyards and flower filled patios and gardens.

Fifty years ago the ancient craft of tejido weaving was an all-but-lost art. But when Eufrosina Vasquez de Sabino was eight years old some people from the Museum of Anthropology and History in Mexico City came to her village of San Bartolo, Yautepec. Here they found one person in the village, an old woman, who still knew tejido. They encouraged her to teach ten local children aged between eight and ten the technique.

Simple luxury and warm hospitality are what you'll find at Hacienda Los Laureles, now a lovely 5- star hotel. Set in a romantic, colonial hacienda setting, it is located just 10 minutes from the charming colonial town square in the historic center of Oaxaca. Elegantly appointed rooms all face onto the tranquil central gardens with their old Indian Laurel trees planted many years ago when the hacienda was first built.

Like so many artists in Oaxaca he is inspired and influenced by the region's light, but also pays tribute to the colors of the Oaxacan earth and the Mixteca. Of Mixteca descent, Hernandez counts his ancestry as one of his major influences but doesn't think of himself as a specifically Mixteco artist or Mexican artist, simply, "a painter."
